UN helicopters strike Ugandan rebel group in DR Congo

UN helicopters targeted for the first time on Saturday a base of the Ugandan Muslim rebel group ADF-Nalu in the eastern DR Congo, the UN force said.

The mission was part of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO), which offers global support to the DRC’s armed forces.

"Two of MONUSCO's attack helicopters struck an ADF base in Saha Sitisa in the Mbau region, northeast of Beni," the mission said in a statement in French.

MONUSCO vowed in the statement to use all means at its disposal to protect populations living under the oppression and threat of armed groups.

“This operation allows us to achieve the clear objective of putting an end to recurrent ADF attacks on civilians,” said Martin Kobler, UN Special Representative and head of MONUSCO.

Kobler also tweeted that the action was undertaken to protect a “threatened civilian population.”
